Murasaki Shikibu was remarkable when yet a child learning to read books that even educated boys found difficult. Murasaki’s childhood was not a happy one as her mother passing away soon after she was born followed by her elder sister on whom she depended.

Since they are, it is up to Genji to act. That is why he who loves her is only charmed by her outrage, and why the issue never comes up again. Unhappily, marriage does not make Murasaki secure, despite Genji’s goodwill.

Does Murasaki love Genji?

The writing is pretty, but also witty. As far as classics go, this is not the most profound or moving text, but it is strangely fun, and has an immediacy that I would never expect to find in a book written so long ago. It is worth reading the introduction, which provides historical context.
