Why did Catherine the Great become empress?
At age 16, she married Karl Ulrich (later Peter III), the heir to the throne of Russia. Shortly after Ulrich ascended the throne, Catherine led a successful rebellion against him. Ulrich abdicated, and in September 1762 Catherine was crowned empress of Russia.
Why did Peter abdicate the throne to Catherine?
Catherine staged a coup and had her husband arrested, forcing him to sign a document of abdication and leaving no one to dispute her accession to the throne.
Was Catherine the Great crowned by Peter?
On July 9, just six months after becoming czar, Peter abdicated, and Catherine was proclaimed sole ruler.
