How can you tell how old a wood carving is?
Carbon dating and dendrology can be used to get the date the tree lived/died… but, not when it was carved. Analysis of the cuts and weathering of the wood, under the microscope for example, can sometimes give an idea of the age/state of the wood before it was cut… and, what happened afterwards.
How can you tell if something is hand carved?
Asymmetry & Irregularity. Antique pieces aren’t going to be perfectly symmetrical because they were made by hand rather than with machines; slight changes in size or shape will help you know that the piece was handmade (Bilis, 2016).
